An Eclectic, Merry Mix of Ornaments

As soon as I saw the brief for the Merry Maximalist challenge at Spoonflower, I knew I wanted to build a pattern with lots of ornaments on a tiger-striped ground. Ornaments were the perfect opportunity to play with details. And tiger stripes just said "maximalist" to me.

What ornaments to include though? Words in the brief like "collected" and "nostalgic" tumbled around in my head. I thought back to Christmases as a teen and the assortment of ornaments that had accumulated over the years — old ornaments & new with a variety of shapes and textures, handmade creations from childhood, baubles & trinkets that told a story. And then I jumped to memories of decorating the tree with my own kids — a vibrant, colorful collection ranging from unicorns to gnomes to ocean creatures, mixed in with bells and candy canes and stars. The brief also used words like "eclectic" and "full of personality." So that's what I created — an eclectic mix of baubles and stars combined with strawberries, butterflies, swans, mushrooms, and teddy bears.

Of the many suggested color palettes, the pink & magenta was calling my name. But I just couldn't get excited about some of the other suggested colors, so I let the pink and magenta inspire a bolder expansion — orange, apple green, teal blue, orchid & purple. And the invitation to include gold landed on the ornament toppers. It all came together — the ornaments, the tiger stripes, the color palette — into one vibrant, eclectic fabric collection that's full of personality.

I kept the variety of prints in Merry Maximalist Christmas simple — the hero covers maximalist all on its own, the tiger stripes (in two sizes) let you layer to create your own maximalism. The hue-family designs let you have fun with color drenching this holiday season.
